The following nine hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the last two weeks. They are listed below by the number of employees and/or positions affected.
1. Indiana University Health to Slash 800 Jobs
Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health plans to cut 800 employees from its workforce by Dec. 1. The layoffs will affect seven of the system's hospitals and are part of IU Health's plan to cut $1 billion from its budget.
2. Christus Begins Gradual Closure of Schumpert Medical Center, Lays Off 200
Christus Health Shreveport-Bossier in Shreveport, La., closed the emergency department and inpatient and outpatient services at Christus Schumpert Medical Center, also in Shreveport. The closure of Schumpert will result in roughly 200 to 225 layoffs.
3. Randolph Hospital to Eliminate 66 Positions
Asheboro, N.C.-based Randolph Hospital notified employees it will cut 66 positions from its workforce by Oct. 1. Of the 66 positions to be axed, 50 are currently filled by employees. The hospital plans to put 15 of the affected employees in vacant jobs within the organization.
4. Johns Hopkins Bayview Closes Skilled Nursing Facility Division, Lays Off 60
Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center closed its skilled nursing facility division, resulting in 60 layoffs. The closed SNF division had faced financial challenges over the years and had been reduced to 38 beds, down from 200 in the 1980s. Johns Hopkins Bayview is working with the 60 affected employees in their job transitions.
5. Taos Health Systems to Lay Off 44
Taos (N.M.) Health Systems plans to lay off 44 employees due to shrinking inpatient volumes and reimbursements.
6. Indian River Medical Center Lays Off 39
Vero Beach, Fla.-based Indian River Medical Center plans to lay off 39 workers and cut employee benefits. The employee-related changes stem from the hospital's attempt to trim $10 million from its expenses.
7. Lawrence + Memorial Cuts 33 Jobs
New London, Conn.-based Lawrence + Memorial Hospital eliminated 33 positions last week. Affected employees include 11 per diem positions, four managers, two directors and six members of the clinical staff, among others.
8. Providence St. Mary Eliminates 10 Positions
Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash., is in the process of eliminating 10 positions, about 1 percent of its workforce. Some of the employees affected by the cuts have been moved to other open positions at the hospital.
9. Arkansas Heart Hospital Cuts Workforce
Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock eliminated an undisclosed number of jobs, citing the "changing healthcare landscape" as the reason for the workforce reduction.
