Lawrence + Memorial Cuts 33 Jobs

New London, Conn.-based Lawrence + Memorial Hospital eliminated 33 positions Tuesday, according to a report by The Day.

Affected employees include 11 per diem positions, four managers, two directors and six members of the clinical staff, among others. Seven of the employees are members of one of the hospital's three unions, according to the report.

As a result of the layoffs, L+M's teen pregnancy prevention program and the Faith in Action Network, which helped local congregations get involved in health education and promotion, have been eliminated. Additionally, due to the layoffs, the hospital will not participate in the Safe Kids New London County program, which provided parenting classes and car-seat inspections at L+M, according to The Day.

This is the third round of layoffs at L+M in less than a year: The hospital laid off 22 employees in November 2012 and then laid off or cut the hours of 22 more in March.

L+M officials pointed to large reductions in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements as the reason the cuts are necessary, according to the report.
