Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Health is freezing hiring for jobs that do not "directly impact patient care," the health system said in a Sept. 12 statement.
"Nothing is more important than protecting the health and safety of our patients and we are putting a priority on filling positions related directly to patient care," according to the health system "At the same time, it is important for our future that we wisely manage our resources."
Sparrow is a six-hospital system that was acquired by University of Michigan Health in April.
The hiring freeze comes shortly after UM Health announced a restructuring of its executive team. Four Sparrow executives have been laid off as part of the reorganization. No additional layoffs are planned as part of the restructuring, according to the health system.
Peter Hahn, MD, also recently resigned as president of UM Health-West in Wyoming, Mich. Several leaders were appointed to oversee operations across the division and Sparrow.
