Antelope Valley Hospital, a 420-bed district hospital located in Lancaster, Calif., intends to lay off 137 employees as part of its financial recovery plan, reports the San Fernando Valley Business Journal.
Hospital CEO Mike Wall and hospital COO/CFO Colette Nichols, PhD, have kept employees and the community informed of the cuts and the hospital's financial situation through several YouTube videos. The hospital has also held forums for employees and staff related to its financial recovery plan.
In the most recent YouTube video update posted June 8, Dr. Nichols said the hospital is experiencing an annual operational loss of about $30 million to $35 million. The future of government subsidy money to the hospital is uncertain, and the hospital's pension plan is only 56 percent funded, she said.
"That's what we're talking about when we talk about the urgency, when we talk about needing to get our financial house in order and going through this process and addressing this now so we control our own destiny," she said.
Dr. Nichols and Mr. Wall did not reveal details about which positions would be affected by the hospital's financial recovery plan. According to the Business Journal, a notice filed June 18 with the California Employee Development Department showed plans to lay off 137 employees.
