After February layoffs, Bay Medical Sacred Heart seeks to hire 300 employees

Bay Medical Sacred Heart in Panama City, Fla., wants to hire 300 employees this year as it rebuilds after Hurricane Michael, according to The News Herald.

Bay Medical sustained wind and water damage from the hurricane when it hit last October. Following the storm, the hospital revealed plans to lay off about 630 staff members in early 2019 once it reopens. Those workers were laid off in February.

Now, Bay Medical wants to hire 300 employees to replace about half of the laid-off workers as the hospital expands services and adds beds, Heath Evans, president of Bay Medical, told the Herald.

"There are 300 jobs that will be restored with those beds. We’ve got 60 positions we’re currently recruiting for," he said. “Over the next six months we will restore operations of 144 beds. We should be done well before the end of the year."

Since last October, the hospital, operated by St. Louis-based Ascension, has reopened 75 inpatient beds, including 15 intensive care beds and 60 medical-surgical beds, eight operating rooms and five heart catheterization labs.
