Internal medicine is the specialty with the most active U.S. physicians, according to a new data report from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
The report's findings on active physicians are based on data from the American Medical Association, as well as U.S. Census bureau population estimates.
Here are 10 specialties with the most active physicians in 2017, according to the report:
- Internal Medicine – 115,557
- Family medicine/general practice – 113,514
- Pediatrics – 58,435
- Emergency medicine – 42.348
- Anesthesiology – 41,762
- Obstetrics and gynecology – 41,656
- Psychiatry – 38,205
- Radiology and diagnostic radiology – 27,719
- General surgery – 25,042
- Cardiovascular disease – 22,211
