Workers Strike at CHS' Deaconess, Valley Hospitals

Workers at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Wash., and Valley Hospital in Spokane Valley, Wash., started a one-day strike at 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to a KHQ report.

About 1,000 workers are on strike, including Valley Hospital nurses and services and technical workers at both hospitals who are members of SEIU 1199NW.

According to a report by The Spokesman-Review, staffing levels remains a contentious issue during contract negotiations between the union and the hospitals.

"We remain committed to the collective bargaining process and to maintaining a positive relationship with our employees and their bargaining agents," the hospitals said in a statement, according to KHQ.

The hospitals hired temporary replacement workers to fill in and patient care is not expected to be affected by the strike, according to statements on both hospitals' websites.

Deaconess and Valley hospitals are both owned by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems. Yesterday, employees from three other CHS hospitals went on a one-day strike.
