Workers call for better staffing at San Francisco General

About 200 workers and members of Service Employees International Union Local 1021 picketed outside San Francisco General Hospital Feb. 25, calling on the hospital to hire more nurses, according to a Mission Local report.

The hospital will soon open new facilities, named after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, MD, but protesters said staffing in existing departments needs to be addressed now, according to the report.

David Canham, who will soon negotiate to expand nurse staffing on behalf of the union, said multiple hospital departments are not in compliance with Title 22 California Code of Regulations, which details how many nurses hospitals must have on staff.

Department of Public Health spokesperson Rachel Kagan would not comment to Mission Local about whether the hospital was violating Title 22, although she said the department and union representatives will get a chance to talk about the issue soon. A hospital spokesperson also declined to comment to Mission Local about the claim.
