Registered nurses picketed Wednesday outside Berkeley, Calif.-based Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, a Sutter Health Affiliate, in protest of recent layoffs and other cuts at the hospital, according to a Berkeley Patch report.
Earlier this month, the hospital eliminated 358 full- and part-time jobs. Additionally, Alta Bates has restructured its nursing staff and plans to cut some inpatient services, according to a news release from the California Nurses Association. The union is also concerned with hospital and system executive pay, according to the release.
Hospital officials told Berkeley Patch the cuts are part of a plan to improve hospital finances and that executive pay at Alta Bates is on par with industry levels.
