Newton-Wellesley Hospital nurses reach tentative agreement, avert strike: 3 things to know

Nurses at Newton (Mass.)-Wellesley Hospital have reached a tentative contract agreement with management, according to a Boston Business Journal report.

Here are three things to know about the agreement.

1. The agreement, reached March 26, averts a strike. The 974 nurses, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, picketed March 9 and authorized the union to call a strike if contentious contract negotiations continued.

2. Under the agreement, nurses will receive a 1 percent pay increase retroactive to October, as well as two .5 percent increases in April 2016 and October 2016, according to the report. Nurses will also receive a bonus of $150-$300 depending on whether they work part time or full time, the report notes.

3. Additionally, Newton-Wellesley Hospital has agreed to bring on two part-time nurses, and change the full-time definition from 40 hours a week to 35 to give more nurses healthcare benefits, according to the Boston Business Journal.
