Unionized employees at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn., have authorized union leaders to call a strike, according to a report by The Day.
Two local chapters of AFT Connecticut represent about 800 nurses and technicians at the hospital. Employees are concerned about job security language in a proposed contract, according to the report. L+M, a 280-bed hospital with about 2,400 employees, has gone through two rounds of layoffs this year, in March and September, and the hospital also laid off workers in November 2012.
Current labor contracts will expire Saturday morning. More negotiations were scheduled for Friday.
"We hope there will be some sort of agreement," a hospital spokesman told The Day. "We continue to focus on negotiating a contract acceptable to both sides."
