A vast majority of nursing professionals — 85 percent — are unlikely to ever switch careers, according to a new study from CareerBuilder. However, nurses are still looking to advance in their careers.
The following are five things to know about nursing career paths.
• Forty-three percent plan to stay in their current setting for at least five years.
• Home care and skilled nursing professionals are the most likely to be currently seeking a new setting.
• Fifty-four percent of nurses who want to move to a new nursing area are looking for better work-life balance.
• Roughly 25 percent of nurses see acute-care hospitals as the most rewarding nursing setting; a combination of acute, specialty and ambulatory follows with 17 percent.
• Thirty-seven percent of nurses have no plans to step into a management role.
The statistics are from a CareerBuilder survey of 886 nurses employed full- or part-time in a hospital, ambulatory, home care, hospice or long-term care/skilled nursing settings.
