Houston-based Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center launched a telehealth platform that allows veterans to receive mental health services remotely.
The system, called telemental health, uses the VA Video Connect app, which can be accessed via computer, smartphone or tablet, to securely connect the patient and provider. The telehealth system aims to help increase veterans' access to mental healthcare by eliminating issues such as travel and time restrictions.
"The technology is ideal for veterans who live far away, have medical problems or find it difficult to leave the house," said Jan Lindsay, PhD, Houston VAMC psychologist, according to a news release. "Often, coming to the clinic is a big burden for our veterans. Barriers include childcare, traffic, parking, taking off work or feeling anxiety when leaving their homes for treatment."
