Medicare payers vow to keep covering remote patient monitoring

Private insurance companies that contract for Medicare will continue to pay for remote patient monitoring, Politico reported May 23.

The Medicare Administrative Contractors, which serve fee-for-service patients across most of the country, decided to keep reimbursing for devices that monitor patient vital signs from home, according to an email obtained by the news outlet. Politico called it a "significant win for the telehealth industry."

Groups such as the American Medical Association, the Alliance for Connected Care and the Connected Health Initiative had advocated for the coverage continuation, the news outlet reported. CMS said in early May that it would no longer cover remote monitoring for new patients following the expiration of the pandemic public health emergency May 11.
