White House extends expiring medical supply tariff exemptions

The White House's Office of the United States Trade Representative has once again extended medical supply tariff exemptions for supplies needed to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

The White House extended 81 tariff exemptions through May 31, and another 18 through Nov. 30. All were set to expire Nov. 14.

The exemptions apply to certain medical supplies imported from China, including gloves, gowns and face masks.

The American Hospital Association in September urged Trade Representative Katherine Tai to extend the tariff exemptions, arguing they're necessary to "ensure hospitals and health systems have the supplies they need so they can continue to provide safe and effective care to all patients."

On Sept. 27, the White House extended the exemptions through Nov. 14.
