Ultrasounds, MRIs May Offer Viable Alternative to Appendicitis CT Scans

Ultrasonography and medical resonance imaging offer similar clinical outcomes as computed tomography scans for detecting pediatric appendicitis, according to a study in Pediatrics.

Researchers found no false positive reports from ultrasounds, MRIs and CT scans, suggesting all three are clinically similar.

Additionally, the difference in time to antibiotics, time to appendectomy, overall length of stay and image-positive appendicitis length of stay between patients receiving the different types of scans were statistically insignificant.

Researchers suggest MRIs and ultrasounds are comparable to CT scans while also eliminating the potentially hazardous radiation exposure from CT scans.
