South Dakota hospital keeps dumping medical waste in city landfill despite fines

Rapid City, S.D., officials claim Regional Health Rapid City Hospital continues to dump its medical waste in the city's landfill despite repeated warnings and multiple fines during the last year, according to the Argus Leader.

The hospital was first cited for disposing of medical waste in the landfill more than one year ago, according to the report. Items included blood-soaked gauze, bloody catheter lines, urine collection containers and fatty tissue.

The South Dakota Department of Health also cited the hospital for six violations involving the improper disposal of medical waste in 2017, the Argus Leader reports.

A hospital official told the publication leaders are in communication with city officials about the proper disposal of medical waste, the report states.
