South Carolina company launches to boost domestic PPE production

Nephron Pharmaceuticals, a drugmaker based in West Columbia, S.C., said July 15 that it is launching a new company, called Nephron Nitrile, to produce medical-grade gloves and shore up the domestic personal protective equipment supply chain. 

The company is expected to produce 3 billion nitrile gloves in the first year of operations, according to the Columbia Regional Business Report. 

The company is partnering with CeramTec, a global ceramic and medical technology company, to make the gloves. CeramTec will make the forms used to mold the gloves, according to the Business Report

The company is set to begin producing the gloves by early next year and create 250 jobs. 

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said during a news conference: "Investment in this kind of business is something that's vital to our future and our national security," according to the Business Report.
