Maryland system builds 400,000-square-foot supply facility

The University of Maryland Medical System, which delivers 25% of all hospital care in the state, is fortifying its supply chain enterprise with a 400,000-square-foot logistics operation center.

Every year, the system treats more than 1.2 million outpatients and admits more than 100,000 patients, according to a news release from the Baltimore-based system. UMMS operates 11 hospitals and more than 150 healthcare locations.

To keep up with demand, the logistics operation center will centralize the system's medical supplies; UMMS annually needs about 95 million exam gloves, 3.5 million isolation gowns, 3 million masks, 1 million IV fluid bags, and 8.5 million needles and syringes.

The center will house the system's supply chain and pharmacy operations, the release said. With the pharmacy inclusion, the project targets high-cost drug purchasing and utilization.

The construction plans also factor in the environmental needs for sterile processing and pharmaceutical cleanrooms, according to a July 3 article in Healthcare Design Magazine

UMMS said the site will increase standardization, reduce waste and create long-term savings.

The facility is expected to open in the second quarter of 2025.
