Leveraging data and advanced analytics to optimize procedural supply spend

As surgical pack costs rise year after year, clinical and administrative leaders often feel they are losing control over pricing measures that are opaque and confusing.

In a Feb. 20 webinar sponsored by Cardinal Health, Sara Reschke, Director of Customer Engagement, Presource Products & Services for Cardinal Health, and Suzanne Champion, RN, BSN, MBA, CNOR, Director of Clinical Operations for Cardinal Health, discussed resources available to increase clinical, supply chain and vendor collaboration for sustainable surgical pack value.

"Pack pricing shouldn't be a mystery, it should be reliable and simple," said Ms. Reschke. "Pricing without the justification can prevent providers from capturing full value of their pack program. Predictable pricing models provide visibility to pricing at the component level so there is a clear understanding of how the total pack price is derived, with the goal of providing transparency.”

Pack vendors can demonstrate the value they provide to their customers by developing a baseline, which can help organizations understand historic spend compared to current spend. With a baseline in place, organizations can use a scorecard to track and measure the value of activities within their pack program and chronicle savings achieved.

"When you have a scorecard…you can refer to it to demonstrate continuous improvement and also show by department and service how your pack program is effective," states Ms. Champion.

A pack vendor that can effectively manage and aggregate data can use algorithms to uncover anomalies and opportunities for continuous improvement.

"Data lets you see what's being used, understand the process and determine if it is valuable for you to go the standardization route," according to Ms. Champion.
