Japanese medical device manufacturer Nipro Medical Corp. is set to open its first North American plant in Greenville, N.C.
Nipro will invest $397.8 million in the project, creating 232 jobs, according to a July 17 news release from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper's office.
The 550,000-square-foot facility will produce medical devices for "patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and other renal health issues," the release said. The facility will also feature a medical training center.
"We are thrilled to start manufacturing our cutting-edge medical devices in the U.S., which will support local healthcare professionals and patients with a stable supply chain and reduced transportation costs," Tsuyoshi Yamazaki, Nipro's senior managing director of global business, said in the release.
Pitt County, where the facility will be built over the course of seven years, approved tax breaks for Nipro worth up to $9 million for the project, NBC affiliate WRAL reported July 17. The state Department of Commerce's Economic Investment Committee approved $2.5 million in job incentives, which will be paid out over the course of 12 years if Nipro meets hiring and investment targets.
