FDA expands approval for Stryker's clot removal device: 3 things to know

The FDA granted expanded approval for Stryker's Trevo Retriever device Feb. 15.

Here are three things to know.

1. The Trevo Retriever is a small, stent-shaped medical device used to remove blood clots.

2. Clinicians may now use the device as a first-line treatment for patients experiencing acute ischemic stroke for up to 24 hours after symptom onset. Previously, the device could only be used for up to six hours after symptoms first appear.

3. The Trevo Retriever is the first thrombectomy device approved with a 24-hour treatment window.
