The FDA approved a non-opioid painkiller patch for nerve pain associated with shingles Feb. 28, according to Reuters.
Here are four things to know.
1. The patch, ZTlido, was approved for postherpetic neuralgia, a common complication of shingles characterized by burning pain.
2. While there are no FDA-approved opioids to treat postherpetic neuralgia, they are commonly prescribed to manage pain.
3. ZTlido is manufactured by Sorrento Therapeutics. After the drugmaker announced its product received FDA approval, its shares soared 18.3 percent, according to the report.
4. The FDA previously rejected ZTlido in 2016.
