GS1, a global standards organization, has been accredited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an issuing agency for unique device identifiers, according to a Supply & Demand Chain Executive report.
The FDA's unique device identifiers rule, published in September 2013, requires all UDI numbers to be assigned by an FDA-accredited issuing agency. A UDI number is typically applied to the medical device label, its packaging and sometimes, the device itself.
The GS1 System is an integrated suite of global standards that provides accurate identification and communication of information regarding products, assets, services and locations.
