Hospitals and health systems have faced massive pressures during the COVID-19 pandemic, which have exacerbated staff burnout and stress and have encouraged record numbers of people to quit. Here are three ways for health systems to foster staff well-being and mental health, according to Mark Greenawald, MD, of Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va., for a report in AMA published Jan. 4.
1. Share stories
Physicians, especially those in leadership roles, should share stories of their struggles with others to help reduce stigma and create kinship among staff.
2. Encourage peer support
Reach out to staff members to check in on them instead of only reactively being available. This shows teams they are supported and can increase resilience.
3. Connect across teams
Partner with colleagues in different specialties and departments to ensure everyone in the organization is supported.
