Cleveland Clinic has signed a contract with an academic medical center in Beijing, where Cleveland Clinic physicians will consult on the opening of a new brain health facility, according to a Plain Dealer report.
Cleveland Clinic signed the five-year agreement with Peking Union Medical College in mid-June, according to the report. The academic medical center includes a 1,800-bed hospital. The company that manages Peking Union is building a 300-bed brain health facility, which is expected to be complete by January.
Cleveland Clinic physicians will help train experts at Peking Union on Parkinson's disease, dementia and strokes. Financial details of the consultation arrangement were not disclosed. The deal broadens Cleveland Clinic's international reach, as the system already has a hospital in the works in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi.
Throughout the next three years, medical staff in each of the specialty areas at Peking Union will travel from China to spend up to six months at a time shadowing specialists at Cleveland Clinic. Twice a year, Cleveland Clinic's specialty-area leaders will make the trip to Beijing to spend a week teaching and monitoring the progress of the programs. Telemedicine will also be used for training and potentially to consult for second opinions, according to the report.
