St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colo., part of Englewood, Colo.-based Centura Health, has committed to a new mission of improving the rate of cancer screenings and decreasing tobacco use in the community, according to a Cañon City Daily Record report.
This new focus was prompted by Centura Health's 2012 Community Health Needs Assessment for Fremont County, which showed cancer screenings and tobacco use were two areas needing improvement.
To improve cancer screening rates, St. Thomas More Hospital will work with the Women's Wellness Connection, a program that provides breast and cervical cancer screenings for low-income women. To reduce tobacco use, the hospital will work with the public health department and the Re-1 School District on smoking cessation and prevention efforts, according to the report.
