State Legislators Oppose GOP Medicaid Change, Official Claims

The head of a national group of state legislators claimed that both Republican and Democratic state lawmakers oppose House Republicans' plan to turn Medicaid spending into block grants, according to a report by United Press International.

"Republican and Democratic legislatures alike are in opposition to Medicaid block grants," said Richard Moore, a Democratic Massachusetts state senator as well as president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Mr. Moore said the GOP budget proposal would probably not provide enough money to cover Medicaid program costs. He predicted the proposed block grants would either force states to "deny people of services they're used to" or pick up the financial shortfall, which would end up "shifting the federal deficit to the states."

Medicaid cuts under the House GOP plan would exceed $700 billion over the next decade.
