Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House and possible presidential candidate, quickly disavowed a statement supporting the individual insurance mandate under the healthcare reform law, according to a report by Mass Device.
Appearing on Meet the Press, Mr. Gingrich endorsed the individual mandate. "I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond ... or in some way you indicate you're going to be held accountable," he said.
But a day later, after a barrage of Republican criticism, Mr. Gingrich released a YouTube video changing his position. "I am against any effort to impose a federal mandate on anyone because it is fundamentally wrong and, I believe, unconstitutional," he said.
