Nineteen of U.S. News & World Report's 2023-24 Honor Roll hospitals received five stars in CMS' updated Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.
CMS updated its star ratings July 26. Star ratings are assigned to hospitals on an annual basis based on 46 quality measures, which are divided into five quality categories: safety of care, mortality, patient experience, readmission rates and timely and effective care.
U.S. News' 2023-24 list of Honor Roll hospitals was released Aug. 1. The rankings highlight 484 Best Regional Hospitals. Of those, 22 hospitals are named to the national Honor Roll "for demonstrating exceptional breadth of excellence across clinical specialties," according to U.S. News. The publication made multiple "refinements" to its annual rankings and ratings this year, including the introduction of outpatient outcomes in key specialty ratings and surgical ratings. It has also done away with assigning ordinal rankings to Honor Roll hospitals. Read more about methodology here.
