The number of students enrolling in radiology-based programs increased from 17,679 in 2023 to 19,815 in 2024, according to the latest American Society of Radiologic Technologists Enrollment report.
The report analyzed survey responses from more than 400 directors of American Registry of Radiologic Technologists-approved radiography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine technology, sonography and MRI programs, according to a Dec. 19 news release from the ASRT.
Here are four notes from the report:
- Enrollment in radiation therapy programs grew from 1,302 in 2023 to 1,663 in 2024.
- For the same time period, enrollment in nuclear medicine technology programs increased from 903 to 1,403.
- Enrollment in sonography programs increased from 3,144 to 5,511.
- Enrollment in MR imaging programs increased from 555 to 1,004.
The study provides additional insight to the bottleneck situation exacerbating the current radiologist shortage.
