Prominent radiologist, educator dies

John Tampas, MD, a former chair of the radiology department, died Dec. 6 at age 95, The National Herald reported.

Dr. Tampas began his medical career in 1956, volunteering as a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon in Korea for one year. He later served as chair of the radiology department at the University of Vermont in Burlington for 26 years and was an educator in its College of Medicine. From 1988 to 1989, he was president of the American College of Radiology and served for many years on the executive council of the American Roentgen Ray Society.

In 2005, the university established the John & Kathryn Tampas Green & Gold Professorship in Radiology. In 2006, Dr. Tampas was further honored with the creation of the Soule-Tampas Green & Gold Professorship in Radiology.
