South Carolina's Medicaid agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, has posted financial metrics for all of the state's 60 acute-care hospitals, 43 of which posted a cumulative profit from 2008 through 2011.
DHHS said it posted the financial and utilization data of the state's hospitals to meet the public's growing desire for transparency in the healthcare system.
"Given how much money taxpayers spend on hospitals through Medicaid and the state employee health plan, we think it is important that the legislature, business community and general public better understand hospital financing," Anthony Keck, director of DHHS, said in a news release. "And since much of the argument for Medicaid expansion is based on hospital CEOs' concerns about hospital financial performance, we want to make sure that the public has access to the same information we use to set our policies."
The five most profitable South Carolina hospitals and health systems during the outlined four-year stretch were:
• Trident Health System (Charleston) — $223.2 million
• Roper St. Francis Healthcare (Charleston) — $207.9 million
• Lexington Medical Center (West Columbia) — $205.9 million
• Grand Strand Regional Medical Center (Myrtle Beach) — $190.2 million
• McLeod Health System (Florence) — $186.3 million
AnMed Health, based in Anderson, endured the biggest losses of any other South Carolina hospital or health system between 2008 and 2011, posting a $95.7 million deficit.
Overall, South Carolina hospitals posted $2.5 billion in profits over that four-year period. The state's 18 rural hospitals posted losses of $24.3 million, which was part of the reason Gov. Nikki Haley announced earlier this year that those hospitals will receive 100 percent funding for any uncompensated care.
