Implementation planning for ICD-10 should precede code set training because the planning process will take much longer, according to an AAPC report.
Kim Reid, CPC, CPMA, CEMC, CPC-I, director of ICD-10 development and training for AAPC, said in a recent article for ICD10Monitor.com that current confusion around ICD-10 focuses on the current steps a practice should take to ensure timely implementation. She said there are many options available on the ICD-10 market for training, and practices should attempt to understand the different options before selecting one.
Ms. Reid said many coders are currently anxious about the ICD-10 implementation process and want to learn the new code set now. She warned practices that if coders become familiar with the new code set now and do not use it until 2013, they might forget the nuances of ICD-10 and require additional training.
