CMS has identified hospitals with the highest Medicare spending per beneficiary, according to a Kaiser Health News report.
The data comes from the new "Medicare spending per beneficiary efficiency measure" that is now on the Hospital Compare website. In that measure, CMS said it has taken into account several factors, including the differing mixes of patients hospitals treat, and it removed other muddling factors, such as the fact that hospitals in some places get more Medicare reimbursements to offset higher wages. Kaiser Health News calculated what the average patient from each hospital cost Medicare using data directly from CMS' website.
The national median across all hospitals (acute-care, rehabilitation, behavioral, etc.) was $17,988 for claims submitted May 15, 2010, through Feb. 14, 2011. Here are the 25 acute-care hospitals across the United States with the highest average spending per Medicare patient.
