West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur, La., has implemented bar code technology designed to help tackle medication errors, reflecting a larger nationwide trend in which hospitals adopt health IT to improve patient safety, according to a KPLCTV report.
The technology is embedded into patients' wristbands, which is encoded with each patient's unique prescribed medications. Hospital officials say the technology will help achieve the goal of "the right patient, right drug, right dose, right time and right route," according to the report.
Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, Mich., implemented related technology for biopsies last month. The organization installed a system designed to barcode, track and reconfirm the identity of biopsy samples through every step in the laboratory process.
