Wichita, Kan.-based Via Christi Health announced the suspension of its kidney transplant program due to four deaths and one graft failure within three weeks among patients who had received transplants in the past 12 months.
The Via Christi Transplant Institute will continue to offer post-transplant care but is not accepting organs for transplant or adding new patients to the wait list while the kidney transplant program undergoes review. The health system's internal review did not find a common pattern among the patients, whose cause of death and time from transplantation differed, according to the release.
Via Christi Health is also engaging external experts in a review of the program, which could take "several months or more," said Steve Nesbit, DO, CMO of the system's Wichita hospitals, in the release.
