The California Department of Public Health announced it has assessed administrative penalties totaling $825,000 against 13 California hospitals for not complying with licensing requirements, resulting in injury or death to patients.
Hospitals are fined $25,000 for incidents that occurred before 2009. Due to new legislation, incidents that occurred in 2009 or later carry fines of $50,000 for the first violation, $75,000 for the second and $100,000 for the third or subsequent violations.
Here are the 13 penalties:
1. Chapman Medical Center in Orange was fined $75,000 for failing to protect a patient from sexual misconduct.
2. Chinese Hospital in San Francisco was fined $50,000 for failing to implement its policies and procedures for feeding tube insertion.
3. Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno was fined $50,000 for failing to follow established policies and procedures for the safe and effective administration of medication.
4. Kaiser Foundation Hospital-Oakland/Richmond in Oakland was fined $75,000 for failing to follow established policies and procedures relating to its cardiac paging system.
5. Kaiser Foundation Hospital-San Diego was fined $50,000 for failing to follow surgical policies and procedures, which resulted in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
6. Kaiser Foundation Hospital-San Francisco was fined $75,000 for failing to follow surgical policies and procedures, resulting in a patient having to undergo another surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
7. Keck Hospital of USC in Los Angeles was fined $75,000 for failing to follow surgical policies and procedures, resulting in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
8. Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata was fined $50,000 for failing to follow surgical policies and procedures, resulting in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
9. Motion Picture & Television Hospital in Woodland Hills was fined $50,000 for failing to follow surgical policies and procedures, resulting in a patient having to undergo a second surgery to remove a retained foreign object.
10. San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp was fined $25,000 for failing to follow established policies and procedures relating to falls.
11. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose was fined $75,000 for failing to provide ongoing assessment of a patient.
12. Southwest Healthcare System in Murrieta was fined $100,000 for failing to follow policies and procedures to provide emergency measures to protect a patient.
13. University of California, San Diego Medical Center was fined $75,000 for failing to provide considerate and respectful care.
