Hospitalization costs for patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia are nearly 1.5-times higher than patients without the infection, according to research published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.
Researchers assessed outcomes and associated healthcare costs for 88,689 patients. Of these, 2.5 percent had ventilator-associated pneumonia, which led to longer average durations of mechanical ventilation, ICU stays and hospitalization than patients without the infection. Notably, overall average hospitalization costs for patients with infection were $99,598, compared to $59,770 for patients without the infection.
