State health officials have slapped a $5,000 fine on Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Fla., after a teenager was discovered to have impersonated a physician assistant for more than a week last August, according to a Palm Beach Post report.
According to the report, then-17-year-old Matthew Scheidt posed as a physician assistant in the hospital's emergency department. In one instance, the young man reportedly performed CPR on a woman. State health officials issued a report outlining shortfalls that contributed to the hospital's lack of oversight, including failure to conduct proper background checks on potential employees.
The hospital has since implemented new action steps to prevent similar occurrences, including a new badge process.
