Oregon Hospitals Report Fewer Infections

Oregon hospitals have reported fewer central line-associated blood stream infections and surgical site infections in 2011, according to the latest report from the Oregon Health Authority.

Specifically, Oregon hospitals experienced 55 percent fewer CLABSIs in intensive care units from 2009 to 2011. In addition, hospitals reported 10 percent fewer surgical site infections from coronary artery bypass grafts and 20 percent fewer surgical site infections from knee replacement surgeries.

It is estimated that the reduction in infection from 2009 to 2011 resulted in statewide savings ranging from $336,000 to $1.3 million for CLABSI, $62,000 to $183,000 for CABG SSI and $184,000 to $535,000 for knee replacement SSI.
