HHS announced its Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has contracted with The Joint Commission to more effectively identify and address health IT-related patient safety events.
Under the contract, The Joint Commission will investigate the role of HIT in adverse events and identify high-risk areas. Among other activities, The Joint Commission will report on HIT-related sentinel events, produce public guidance on preventing HIT-related events and conduct at least 10 investigations, at five hospitals and five ambulatory sites, on HIT-related events, according to the contract.
The contract coincides with the release of the final Health IT Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan, which aligns HHS' HIT and patient safety goals.
