Exeter (N.H.) Hospital officials are testing additional patients for possible infection with hepatitis C after a former technician at the hospital reused syringes on patients, according to a San Francisco Gate report.
David Kwiatkowski, a former technician at Exeter Hospital, was arrested and faces federal drug charges in connection to a hepatitis C outbreak at the hospital. Mr. Kwiatkowski allegedly injected himself with the anesthetic fentanyl and refilled the syringes with saline before administering the injections to patients. So far, 30 patients have tested positive for hepatitis C.
When Exeter Hospital officials were alerted of the outbreak, only patients who had been treated in the hospital's cardiac catheterization lab were asked to be tested. Now hospital officials are asking all patients to undergo testing.
In addition, prosecutors are hoping to press additional charges, possibly one for each infected patient, against Mr. Kwiatkowski.
