Veritas Medical, a startup company created by University of Utah students, has created the first antibacterial catheter to be self-sterilizing while residing in a patient.
The LIGHT LINE Catheter uses high-intensity narrow spectrum light to kill bacteria and therefore prevent infections.
Veritas Medical recently won first place and $75,000 at the International Business Model Competition for its invention.
The company has a utility patent on the LIGHT LINE Catheter technology and will start clinical trials next year, with hopes of selling the catheter by 2016.
