Leapfrog Group Grades Hospitals A-F on Patient Safety

The Leapfrog Group has publicly released new letter grades for 2,618 general hospitals' performance in patient safety.

The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Safety Score gives hospitals a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F based on 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data, including rates of preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections An "A" grade represents the safest hospitals and "D" and "F" grades represent the "most hazardous environments," according to the news release. The new scores are based on data updated over the past six months, most covering performance in 2011.

Here is the breakdown of scores of the 2,618 hospitals, with approximate percentages:

•    790 hospitals (30.2 percent) — A
•    678 hospitals (25.9 percent) — B
•    1,004 hospitals (38.3 percent) — C
•    121 hospitals (4.6 percent) — D
•    25 hospitals (0.95) — F

The Leapfrog Group's latest ratings are updates of Leapfrog's inaugural Hospital Safety Score released in June, which received pushback from several high-profile hospitals and the American Hospital Association over the scoring methodology. The Leapfrog Group modified its methodology based on research and public comments for the updated scores.
