Joint Commission Proposes Changes to Diabetes Care Certification Program

The Joint Commission announced it is seeking comments on proposed changes to its Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Care certification program.

The program is based on the 2006 and 2010 revisions of the American Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes. After reviewing the 2013 ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, The Joint Commission identified five areas for enhancement in the certification program:

•    Care of the critically ill patient
•    Transition of the patient between critical and non-critical units, and to the outpatient setting
•    Insulin pump therapy
•    Interdisciplinary team
•    Insulin pen infection control

To improve these areas, The Joint Commission proposed changes to the certification program. Comments can be submitted online or by mail through April 10.
