The Joint Commission has highlighted the risk of incorrect blood glucose readings and how patients can reduce risks related to those errors.
Some glucose meters and test strip combinations cannot distinguish between glucose and other sugars, which could give a false reading that could lead to adverse events, such as loss of consciousness, coma and neurological damage.
The Joint Commission has provided a link to a list of glucose meter/test strip combinations that are able to show correct glucose readings. This list was crafted by Baxter and is available here.
The Joint Commission also offers four ways patients can reduce the risk of being harmed by incorrect glucose readings, including use of laboratory testing methods instead of point-of-care glucose meters.
