Intermountain Healthcare Precision Genomics in Murray, Utah, granted more than $400,000 to four translational research projects aimed toward advancing precision medicine.
Here are the four winners:
1. Stanford (Calif.) University will design an algorithm to use in Intermountain Healthcare's patient records to determine an individual's risk for developing familial hypercholesterolemia.
2. Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City will use breast cancer samples from Intermountain Healthcare to analyze genome areas predicted to contain genes susceptible to breast cancer. The organizations will also study genetic epidemiology of ovarian cancers in families that are high-risk for developing the disease.
3. Vivid Genomics, a company that helps pharmaceutical companies find patients for clinical trials, will sequence genomes of individuals with and without dementia to analyze predictors of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. The institutions will use Intermountain Healthcare's sequencing service, NGS ONE Genomic Services, to complete their research.
