The Onondaga County (N.Y.) Health Department is currently investigating an outbreak of whooping cough affecting the Baldwinsville School District, according to a Syracuse.com report.
The health department reportedly sent a letter to school district parents instructing them to seek medical care and keep their kids out of school if they're experiencing a persistent cough, according to the report. The department has not disclosed how many students have been sickened.
Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a bacterial illness transmitted via person-to-person contact. The illness causes uncontrollable, violent coughing, which can last for weeks or months.
