Between 2007 and 2011, the Medicare readmission rate averaged 19 percent. In 2012, the rate dropped to 18.4 percent.
Of the 306 hospital referral regions analyzed by CMS, readmissions dropped by 5 percent or more in 73. The largest reduction was seen in Longview, Texas.
